What Forward Deployed Engineers Actually Do All Week
The FDE job is not simply coding near a customer. It is the operating loop between customer reality and product possibility.
A forward deployed engineer is usually pulled into the work when the product is valuable but not yet complete enough for the customer environment. The customer has urgency. The product has gaps. The account team needs a path forward. Core engineering needs signal, not noise.
The FDE sits in the middle and turns ambiguity into working software, deployment plans, and product truth.
The Weekly Loop
- Discovery: understand the customer's workflow, constraints, politics, data shape, and deadline.
- Scoping: decide what can be solved with configuration, integration, custom code, or product escalation.
- Prototyping: build the smallest useful thing that proves the path without pretending it is the final product.
- Deployment: make the system work inside the customer's real environment, not a demo environment.
- Escalation: translate customer urgency into technical priorities without letting every request become a roadmap hijack.
- Product feedback: turn repeated customer-specific work into evidence for the core product team.
Why It Feels Different From SWE
Software engineers often optimize for durable systems inside a defined product boundary. FDEs work where the boundary is still being discovered. The job rewards technical judgment, but it also rewards customer judgment: knowing when to build, when to push back, and when to expose a product gap clearly.
Why It Feels Different From Solutions Engineering
A solutions engineer may prove that the product can solve a customer problem. An FDE is more likely to own part of making it actually work. The difference is not status. It is accountability for production reality.
Career angle: If you want to become an FDE, collect stories where you wrote code, worked with a customer, handled ambiguity, and made a product or deployment decision under pressure.
The Question
Where should the line be between useful customer-specific engineering and unsustainable custom work?
